Sylvan Lake Half Iron race cancelled

Just got the word by email yesterday afternoon. My big race of the year has been “postponed” to 2011. In otherwords – cancelled. Am I dissappointed? Yes. But I have to say, the organizers did it for a good reason. The town is undergoing some restructuring and there is going to be a lot of road construction this year right along the main road next to the lake. There isn’t a safe transition area, the construction is going to make the roads unsafe. It was a wise decision. It’s just tough when you’ve been mentally visualizing a big race like this and then it’s cancelled. Good thing is that they offered either a full refund or a transfer to another one of the organizer’s events – including next year’s race.

So right away last night I made the decision to ask for the full refund. I would love to race the iron distance in Oliver but the timing is bad. I think that’s too close to IM Coeur d’Alene and I have to be there – both to support Marc, his teammate and old coach (yes, Coach Mark) and to sign up for next year. But I found out the Viterra Ironman Calgary 70.3 is August 1st! Perfect. So that will now be THE big race of the season for me.

Trouble is, I’m nervous. Hey – it’s the same distance and I’m prepared already (just need a little more experience on the bike – particularly changing a flat!) but it’s an Ironman sanctioned race. I might get star struck if any of my heros and heroines are there. Gulp. One of my demons now arises. Must get over that though. This will be an excellent primer for next year’s Ironman.

The Calgary Half Ironman is in its second year. There might still be some kinks (although I have yet to hear about any from last year) but the organizers already have one race under their belt so I’m hoping it will be a good one.

Anway – it threw me off but not enough to quit training. My marathon is at the end of May. I have a 10 miler third week in April. I’ve been doing well in terms of running. My speed has increased but not so much that I’m pushing myself beyond my limits. I did an 8:03 min mile tempo run last week! I was quite thrilled but at the same time – the way I was feeling I knew I’d be better off keeping those around 8:30 or even 9. Save 8 minute miles for next year 😉

Something I did learn that I’d like to pass on. Both Marc and Coach Mark said it is okay to split your long slow run up in a day. Go for 10k – come home and take a little break – head out and do another 10 or 15k, etc. until you hit your target for the day. I’ve also been told I can split up my tempo runs – 30 mins in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. I just need to make sure I complete them in one day. You’re still getting your mileage in but it reduces the risk for injury. Anyway – it works for me. Someone else might argue that point. But whatever works for you, works for you. Give it a try if you want. I know my training would have been more effective if I did that last year.
