Is taking a break from training wise?


A week and a half ago I just didn’t want to go for my long run. I thought that I needed a mental break. Physically I might have been able to pull it off but I was just too mentally exhausted to work myself up into doing it. So I thought I’d take a whole week off. I was on an easy week for my marathon training anyway.

I really don’t think this is a good idea folks. I spent the entire week last week suffering from insomnia, thus chopping my finger with a pair of scissors at work, feeling hopelessness and doom, wound up with a nasty head cold, and just felt pudgy, bloated and cranky.

With a massive effort on my part, I finally got out the door to do some speedwork on Tuesday. It felt good. I hadn’t lost any speed. The weather was great and it put me in a great mood for that evening and the next few days after. So next time I feel like I need a break, I’ll just force myself out the door – keeping in mind how horrible I felt when I wasn’t working out.

Tonight is a workout at the YMCA with a friend. So my advice is when you want to take a break from training, don’t take time off working out. Mix it up a bit. If you have to do a bike for 30 mins and you really don’t want to, hop on the eliptical trainer or do some weights. Just don’t give up altogether. It will make you miserable!

A good pick me up is looking at a calendar with your race date clearly marked on it. That ought to scare you into going if anything else!
