Keep fuelled during the race

It was my last official “long slow run” today. I was going to do 25 but while running I thought it would be best if I just stuck to 20k, like my program suggested. I’m just worried that I haven’t put in long enough distances. I went over my “map my run” site and realized that a lot of the 29 ks that I ran were only about 26-27. However, the map isn’t 100% accurate. Still, I’m worried about my endurance. I guess it’s too late now.

What I did realize was that I really haven’t been keeping the engine stoked with coal during my runs. I’ve been cautious about what I eat the night before; I eat a light breakfast of Special K in the morning with a banana and 16 oz of water with NUUN and I always have eggs and hashbrowns right after the run. I always make sure I have plenty of water, and usually two 8oz bottles of water mixed with Gleukos. I take gels with me but looking back on all my long runs, particularly the days where I hit a wall and just feel exhausted (no pain yet, knock on wood), I always have gels or chewies left over. Conclusion: I’ve been watching my post and pre nutrition but I haven’t been taking in enough calories DURING the run. Duh.

So today was my experiment day – yes, a little late in the training to be doing this, but I had to know if it was not ingesting enough calories during the run or I just can’t keep it up after 25k. Answer? When I hit my 18K mark, I was stunned that I felt remarkably good. I wasn’t tired at all. If it wasn’t for the fact that I had to be at a barbeque today, coupled with the fact that I really shouldn’t be running longer than 20k with the marathon only two weeks away, I could have gone another 10K easily.

So that’s where I’m at right now. My short runs are fast. I’m averaging 9:30 minute miles. My long runs have been anywhere from 10:30 to 11:30. I would like to go faster during the race and I just might. Running a 9:35 pace for 15K is okay for that distance but it would be uncomfortable to keep that up for another 27K. So I’m thinking between 10 to 10:30 min pace and give ‘er on the last 10K. What I have to remember is to keep the gels coming. Marc suggested a mix of gels and Carbo-pro. He said he would bike along side me and give me a bottle but I don’t know if I want to mess with my routine yet. On the other hand, I’ll need about 8 gels for the race. Ug.
