Is it my turn to feel training burn out?


Ever since the road race, I’ve been finding it difficult to get motivated again during the week. I have been getting my long runs in on Sundays and I have done a wee bit of running during the week but I haven’t been on the bike or for a swim since the first weekend in July when we all went out to the lake for a full day of triathlon training. That was two weeks ago.

Well, I guess the big race now is my marathon so as long as I get some speedwork, hills and long runs in, I should be okay. My final race is the Women’s Only Sprint on September 7th. I decided last night that was it. I’m done. No more for the year until next spring – late spring probably. I’m not too worried about the sprint race coming up. I know I can finish it in well under two hours – most likely 1:40 or 1:45 (no wetsuit to peel off and winter parka to put on for the bike!). Besides, I signed up for it more for getting more experience in dealing with the pressures of transition.

So I’ll be okay – but it has been hard to want to go for a run after work. The temperatures are going up and I’m feeling lazy. I also wound up with some type of sunburn rash on my back where I burned two weeks ago on the bike. So now I’m nursing that and trying to stay out of the sun until it heals up. Still, is that an excuse or do I really need the rest? I think about running everyday. I like the fact that I’ve increased my speed significantly on my own. I picture myself crossing the finish line in under 4:30 – but it’s not enough to get me to put on my running gear after work. Forget about mornings. I’ve been having trouble sleeping so if I wake up in the middle of the night and lay awake for hours, I end up changing the time for the alarm to get more sleep.

Discipline – that’s what I’m lacking right now in these lazy days of summer. Turning to Marc isn’t helping – he’s worse than I am! My aim is to put in about an hour to an hour and a half tonight with a bit of speedwork mixed in. That means a run on Friday and maybe a bike. Saturday I plan on trying to get a swim in. That’s minimal but at least that will be more than I’ve done the past two weeks. Let’s see if I can hold myself to that promise.
