Less than 24 hours to race day

It’s only a 15k but it’s important to me. I really wanted to be able to run 1:30 but the back still hurts. I can feel it in the hip too. I guess it isn’t as bad as it was yesterday. Marc said he’s run with a tight back – but I’m worried it will affect my time. My sprint race was my first triathlon so I can’t complain about my time but this will be my first real race of the season. I’ve run 15k races before – and 10k and half marathons – so this will really set the stage for what I can do in August.

I was thinking last night about my new Mizuno running tights. I’ve never run in them because I didn’t have the opportunity to test them out – same with the new Mizuno shoes. Okay – that’s a no no. But I have no choice. I can’t wear the runners I’ve been training in. They’re already 4 months overdue for the pasture. I’m starting to wonder if that isn’t why I’ve had a back ache.

I don’t have race anxiety. I’m prepared. I’ve run the route and am familiar with it. I know where to park, where the bag drop off is and I even figured out how to put this “D-tag” on my shoe (had to do my own research on the ‘net). I found out some people I’ve run with in the past are going to be there too. I was totally geared up for this until the back pain hit. Now I’m just worried.

No drinks tonight and I’m going to bed early – have to be up by 5am (ish). BBQ chicken and rice for dinner. All I need to do is make sure I pack enough gels, get some NUUN water ready to hydrate tomorrow am and maybe change up the iPod tunes. Maybe I’ll take a 20 minute jog on the treadmill with the new shoes. Maybe I’ll finally have that hot soak.

24 hours from now, I’ll be sitting down for brunch with a friend of mine and this race will be behind me – either moaning about my time or on a high because I managed to pull off a pr.
