What not to eat when training

I love food. I’m actually very happy that I am involved in marathon running and triathlon because I really enjoy eating a variety of types of food – good old fashioned hamburgers or exotic fusion. My aunt is Thai so I learned at an early age to appreciate the flavors of lemongrass, mint, and sambal olek. As a matter of fact, I think I have a small addiction to spicy food – I think it’s because of the endorphins released from the pain.

Where am I going with this? I discovered the other day that some things you just shouldn’t eat the night before a big training block. Marc and I discovered this great little Vietnammese restaurant close by called La Pagode. The food and the service was fantastic. We chowed down on noodle bowls, spring rolls and of course I had to order kim chi. We stuffed ourselves and chased it down with a Heiniken.

Not such a good idea.

Next day I had heart burn from hell and the thought of a 40 minute swim followed by an hour on a stationary bike made me ill. And, yes, I was a little bloated.

So there – lesson learned. I definitely won’t eat hot food the night before a race. That wouldn’t be pretty.
